# Setting the Static IP Address

<figure><img src="/files/rixW0N2mJwdCzE1Iiwhg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If the "Use Static IP address" radio button is selected, the Static IP Address is the IP address used by the ROVLe. Ensure that it is unique and on the proper subnet. Discussions of subnets are beyond the scope of this manual.

If the "Get my IP address automatically from DHCP" radio button is selected, the ROVLe will try to get an address from a DHCP server. If this fails, the fallback IP address is used.

No netmask is necessary.

The Cerulean [SonarView application](https://docs.ceruleansonar.com/c/sonarview/) can force the ROVLe to accept a new static IP address, even if you have accidentally set the static IP to an inaccessible address.

{% hint style="info" %}
The ROVLe will not allow you to set an address starting with 0, 127 or 255. This is the nanny state at its worst.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.ceruleansonar.com/c/ethernet-rov-locator/configuring-the-rovle/rovle-basic-configuration/setting-the-static-ip-address.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
