Quick Start: Omnitrack Buoy + Wi-Fi

This page will cover the basic deployment and operation of the Wi-Fi Omnitrack system with the BlueROV2.

Requirements:

This guide is written assuming that the Omnitrack system is outfitted with the MKIII ROVL. If using a different ROVL, the term "Transponder" instead refers to the "Transmitter," and the term "Transceiver" instead refers to the "Receiver."

Hardware:

  • Wired Omnitrack Buoy Kit

  • Optional Omniswitch Network Hub or BaseStation Plus

Software:

Setting up the Omnitrack Buoy

  1. Unbox Omnitrack. See unboxing/assembly video. Be careful not to damage the ROVL Transceiver as its cable is connected to the buoy! Do not forget the included accessory package and ROVL Transponder in the packaging.

  2. Assemble the Omni Track. See unboxing/assembly video.

Refer to installation instructions here.

Connecting the Omnitrack to a Network

  • If you are using a BaseStation Plus, connect the BaseStation Plus to your PC and follow the PC setup directions here. Be sure you attach the antenna before powering on the BaseStation Plus.

  • If you are doing your own network bridging, see here.

  1. Install the antenna on the Omnitrack Wi-Fi module. Insert a charged battery into the Wi-Fi module and power it on using the screw-in power switch next to the antenna jack on the Wi-Fi module.

  2. If you are using a BaseStation Plus: Turn on the BaseStation Plus. Wait at least 60 seconds for the Wi-Fi to boot, and wait another 60 seconds for the Wi-Fi on the Omnitrack to boot and connect. Your PC should be able to talk to the Omnitrack at this point (try browsing to http://192.168.2.9 from your PC, assuming you have not changed the default addresses).

  3. If you are NOT using a BaseStation Plus: After waiting at least 60 seconds for the Wi-Fi to boot, connect your PC's Wi-Fi interface to the Omnitrack Wi-Fi. The SSID is "Omnitrack." The password is "OmnitrackAP". Let your PC Wi-Fi adapter obtain an IP address automatically (this will likely be the case already unless you have changed your PC's Wi-Fi adapter setup).

  4. Power the ROV and wait 3 minutes for it to boot. Verify you can browse to the ROV at http://192.168.2.2 (assuming you have not changed the ROV from its default IP address, and that you have set a compatible IP address [by default 192.168.2.1] for the PC's Ethernet interface you are using to test).

  5. Power up the Omnitrack and verify you can browse to it at http://192.168.2.9.

  6. If not in the United States, check your Wi-Fi country settings.

  7. At this point, you should check the configuration of the ROVL topside transmitter or transceiver, and you should be ready to operate.

  8. If you are testing indoors you may want to look here.
